ABOUT VITAMIN K2

Vitamins K1 and K2 belong to a group of fat-soluble vitamins which have health benefits such as aiding in blood clotting. Numerous studies show that vitamin K2 has additional health benefits over vitamin K1, including supporting strong bones. K2 compounds are designated by their side-chains, as MK-4 through MK-13, with MK-7 being the most well studied and having the greatest potential health benefits.

Studies have shown that MK-7 is the form of vitamin K2 with the highest bioavailability, which allows vitamin K2 MK-7 to accumulate in the bloodstream and thus be available outside the liver, mainly in bones and arteries. Research suggests that vitamin K2 may contribute to coagulation and inhibit calcium deposits in arteries and blood vessels. It may also play a role in the formation and maintenance of strong bones.*

Vitamin K2 is found in fermented foods such as natto, meat, eggs and certain types of cheese. But most of the vitamin K from the diet is consumed as vitamin K1, meaning that supplementation in vitamin K2 is often necessary to benefit from its potential positive effects on health.
